Reviews of the film by group members

The film “Threads” is a dramatization of the effects of a nuclear strike in Britain. It is a good combination between a drama and a documentary. The story begins with the scene when Ruth (the main character, Karen Meagher) tells her boyfriend Jimmy (Reece Dinsdale) that she is pregnant. Meanwhile, the tensions mount in the Middle East as American intervention in Iran creates a standoff between them and the Russians. After the situation escalates into all-out nuclear war, the film is focusing on disintegration social, social psychology issue and fallout-sickness impact related to the bomb thought the eyes of the main character.

In my opinion, Threads is brilliantly made, even though many scene are very scary, harrow and stressful. As it could stick into your mind for long time after watching it, I believe it is certainly not good for children. I was wondering if it’s real or it’s just a movie, since most of special effect and the conflict of the movie, also most of the actors are unknown. In the movie, people try to survive after the bomb. They are starving, exhausted, cold, and no emotional and get numb. The scenes of two characters eating the raw food and also other people eating rats, have the ability to give the audience image of nuclear paranoia.

However, the movie has no clear ending and gives the feeling of hopeless. No heroes and no happy ending like American movie. The final scene of Ruth’s daughter giving the birth to a baby is overwhelmingly pessimistic and unbelievable.

  1. Well, thank you for your comment. About Threads in my point of view. I think this film is basically mixture about dramatically and documentary. In dramatically side, this movie fiction a story of people in War Time in order to make an audience touch in a feeling and create some scene to convince an audience to believe in a story such as audience feel depress, sad or scary with some of scene . As we see other comment which says this film make them feel scary, depress and distinguish about people life during War time. In documentary side, I think this film is not has all in documentary truth just only some point of the story which is the fact that America want to help Iran to encounter with Soviet. But the situation of UK was dropped bomb was not truth. In addition, the director also creative license by taking and fabricate some emotion in a film to persuade audience to understand a story. For example, the scene that people seeing freeze rat on road and Ruth beg it for her children, it shows the emotion of Mom who has no choice for feeding her children.
If you have different ideas please share it with me. Thank you :D

  2. thank you for your comment as well! as i mention before about dramatically and documentary mixture in the film, i think we have to same idea that the movie become overwhelmingly pessimistic since some part of the movie are not base on the real story or documentary truth. however, the director can make the good combination between dramatic and documentary to make the audience believe and understand about life after the bomb! the director send strong message to the audience about nuclear and warn people to be aware. nothing good about the bomb in any generation.

  4. A thread in my point of view is basically combined documentary and dramatically same as other comment. But I think this film is not only specifically show about how horrible Bomb are, but also expose the relationship between people ,family ,couple and a social economic after Bomb. The relationship of interpersonal is this movie use Ruth, Ruth‘s family, Jimmy and jimmy’s family to continue a film especially Ruth and her baby. Moreover, the social economic after a bomb can make the city was destroyed, people injured and no facility or food. The social in that time was both horrible and depress, people don’t have a food while stay outside with cold weather. I think this movie can persuade audience to believe and feel piteous. Therefore, I think this movie is very good for people who want to know the harmful of effect of Bomb and War because you will see the real life during the War time. And it is better for teach a new generation about the negative point of War which can make a country ruinous and people are die.

  6. I think most of people who live in UK or Sheffield has a once time to watched this film. This film was mostly opened in secondary school Social Education lesson. So the children were known this film and remember it with the scared and horrible film. However, between the scared feelings, they think that is was a realistic situation which can occur anytime if we don’t stop a War. Moreover, it has some comment which say that this movie can me they afraid about the death and the War. Therefore, I think although this movie is too scared for children but most of schools want to cultivate the negative point of the War and nuclear weapon to the new generation in order to illuminate and realize about the danger weapon which call “Atomic Bomb”.

  8. Threads Film Reviews, May 2003
    By Mick Jackson, UK, 1984

"There is a tendency to dismiss the film as dated and a product of the nuclear paranoia of the eighties; interesting to study, but not relevant today."

  9. I want to add you about the narrator informs of Threads:
“In an urban society, everything connects. Each person’s needs are fed by the skills of many others. Our lives are woven together in a fabric, but the connections that make society strong, also make it vulnerable.”
